A conversation can answer a question. But a prospective customer still needs somewhere to understand the whole offer: what the business does, who it serves, what the work looks like and how to take the next step.

“

A website does not create demand by itself. It can, however, remove avoidable uncertainty.

From this story · Embiro Technologies

That is the practical idea behind She Builds Uganda, Embiro’s campaign to build professional websites for women-owned businesses. The work is about giving each business a place it can point people to, with its own identity and a clear path from interest to contact.

A website does not create demand by itself. It can, however, remove avoidable uncertainty. Someone who arrives from a referral should not have to scroll through months of posts to discover what is available or how to get in touch.

Start with the questions a customer asks

Our showcase brings together businesses with different audiences and offers. Treating every one of them as the same catalogue would miss what makes them worth visiting. The useful starting point is the customer’s next question.

For a service business, examples of work and an explanation of the process may do more than a long company introduction. For a product business, the range, product images and enquiry route deserve attention early. For a community organisation, the purpose and ways to participate need to be easy to find.

Those are editorial choices before they are layout choices. A polished page cannot compensate for an offer that is difficult to understand. Good design gives the important information enough space and makes the next action visible.

Explain the offer in language a customer would use.

Show something concrete: work, products, people or a place.

Make the contact route easy to find on a phone.

Afroniceties: lead with a clear introduction.

Agasia Waste Solutions: give a different business a different introduction.

The showcase should work as reliably as the sites

There is a second part to this story: how we present the work. Our She Builds portfolio originally depended on remote website previews. When some of those previews failed, a working business website could appear as a missing image in our own showcase.

We replaced that dependency with stored homepage screenshots. Visitors can now see a captured view of the design before opening the business’s website. The screenshot is a record of the work, while the separate visit link leads to the current site.

That distinction matters. A captured image is not a live feed and will need refreshing as a business changes. But a portfolio should not lose its visual evidence because an unrelated preview service stops responding. Keeping the image with our own site makes that part of the experience more predictable.

Launch is a starting point

A useful business website needs attention after its first publication. Offers change. Contact details change. New work deserves to be added. Keeping those essentials current is more valuable than adding features nobody needs.

The lesson we take from She Builds is a practical one: digital opportunity starts with a clear, usable introduction. Give the business its own space, make the information useful and leave people with a next step they can actually take.

A useful check after launch

Open the website on your phone. Can you understand the offer, see an example and find a working contact route? Repeat the check whenever the business changes its services or contact details.

What we took from the work
Visibility is useful when it leads to understanding. A small, clear website can give a business a stronger introduction than a much larger collection of disconnected posts.

Explore the She Builds Uganda showcase ↗

Designing a national stage around the people on it

For Miss Universe Uganda, we built the website’s story around delegates, advocacy and the national journey. Here is what that meant for the experience.

More than a place to announce a winner

A pageant website has a strong visual subject. That can make it tempting to lead with spectacle and leave the useful information to follow. The brief for Miss Universe Uganda asked for something broader: an official digital home for the delegates, their advocacy and the national journey.

The site needed to help visitors find their way into that story. Some arrive to explore the people involved. Others are looking for the season, event information or ways to participate. A single dramatic image cannot carry all of those jobs.

Our design direction was to put the women at the centre, then organise the season, partners and participation around them. That gave the visual identity a purpose: introduce the people and make the journey understandable.

The order of information tells a story

Hierarchy is one of the most consequential decisions in a website. What appears first tells a visitor what the organisation values. What comes next determines whether the initial impression turns into understanding.

For this project, profiles and stories help give the pageant a human centre. Event information and routes into participation make it useful beyond a first visit. The result is an experience that brings the public-facing parts of the pageant into one recognisable place.

This does not mean every visitor must follow one carefully prescribed sequence. A useful site gives people several clear ways in. Someone already looking for an event should not have to read the entire brand story before finding it.

01

People

Introduce the delegates and the advocacy that gives their participation context.

02

The journey

Give the season, stories and event information a recognisable home.

03

Participation

Make it clear where visitors can explore further or get involved.

Give strong imagery a useful structure

Editorial images are central to the experience. They establish the atmosphere and let the people carry the visual story. Their value depends on the content around them: a name, a useful heading, a route to learn more or a clear next action.

“

The mobile view is part of the design, not an afterthought to the desktop composition.

From this story · Embiro Technologies

We wanted the identity to hold together across the site without every page feeling like the same poster. Consistent typography and navigation provide continuity. The content gives each part of the experience its own reason to exist.

On a phone, those relationships become especially important. An image that looks generous on a desktop must still leave room for context and navigation on a small screen. The mobile view is part of the design, not an afterthought to the desktop composition.

The mobile homepage: the same identity, adapted to a smaller reading space.

Build a home for an ongoing story

An event has a date. An organisation has a continuing story. Designing only for a launch announcement can leave a site feeling finished the moment that announcement is no longer new.

The public experience for Miss Universe Uganda connects profiles, stories and event information within the same identity. That structure gives visitors more than a moment to look at; it gives them a place to explore.

The lesson applies beyond pageants. Conferences, cultural organisations and membership communities all benefit when the website makes the people and the purpose visible, then gives the surrounding information a clear role.

A question for event websites

What will still be useful the day after the event? Profiles, stories and a clear record of the journey can give people a reason to return.

What we took from the work
A strong visual identity draws people in. Another wants to know about delivery. The business owner is trying to reply while getting on with the work that made the business worth contacting in the first place.

That is a more useful introduction to Yadi than a list of AI capabilities. Yadi is Embiro’s AI helper for the everyday customer conversations a small business handles on WhatsApp. Its public story starts with the person doing that work and the support they could use.

The line “Your business, with backup” gives that relationship a simple shape. There is still a business, still an owner and still a way they want to speak to customers. The product is introduced as help with the conversation.

Show the role before explaining the machinery

On the website, a human business story sits alongside a conversation example. The combination does two jobs. The person makes the context recognisable; the exchange gives the product a concrete role in that context.

“

They need to understand which part of their day it could help with.

From this story · Embiro Technologies

A visitor should not need to understand a model, an integration or an internal workflow to decide whether a product is relevant. They need to understand which part of their day it could help with. Technical detail can follow once there is a reason to care.

This is also a useful discipline for product teams. If the first explanation needs several abstract terms, the job may not be clear enough yet. A small, specific example forces the introduction to say what changes for the person using it.

The business’s voice belongs in the promise

Customer conversations are part of how a business presents itself. An answer can contain the right information and still feel unlike the business that sent it. That makes voice and control part of the product story, rather than details to hide at the bottom of the page.

Embiro’s introduction to Yadi describes WhatsApp questions answered in the business’s voice, with the owner in control. Those are useful expectations to put in front of a prospective user. They also set a standard for the experience to live up to.

An example conversation helps explain the intention. It is not evidence that every future reply will be correct, or that a business can stop paying attention to its customers. The website needs to help people explore the product with a clear sense of its role, rather than promising that all the work disappears.

Begin with a recognisable moment in the user’s day.

Show the product doing one understandable job.

Make the human role and the limits of the promise clear.

Yadi’s public demo uses fictional conversations. Here, a proposed reply is ready for review; nothing has been sent.

Leave room for the next question

A homepage is an introduction, not a complete product manual. Once the role is clear, people should have a straightforward way to explore how the product works and whether it fits their business.

For Yadi, the website connects that initial promise with routes into the experience. The visual story and the next action belong together: recognise the situation, understand the help and then investigate further.

The broader lesson is simple. When building an AI product, the technology may be the most interesting part to the team making it. For the person considering it, the most interesting part is often a familiar task becoming easier to handle. Start there.

01

Recognise the situation

Start with a customer question the business already handles.

02

Understand the help

Use one concrete example to show the product’s role.

03

Explore the fit

Give the owner a clear next step and room to ask questions.

What we took from the work
A product becomes easier to understand when its first story is about the work people already do. The AI should have a clear role in that story.

Explore the Yadi product story ↗

One profile. Their email needs a signature. Someone they meet needs a way to save their details or book a conversation. Each item is small, but producing them separately creates several places for the same information to drift.

We built Team Studio around one profile. A team member enters their details and can see how those details appear on a business card, in an email signature and on a personal contact page. The same source supports all three introductions.

The aim is practical consistency. The name, role and contact details should agree wherever somebody encounters them. The brand should remain recognisable without each person having to recreate a layout from scratch.

Connect the card to something useful

The back of the business card includes a QR code leading to the person’s contact page. That page brings together their contact details and meeting link, so the printed card can be a route into a useful digital introduction.

We chose memorable public links based on the first-name part of the work email. A link that a person can read or remember is useful alongside a QR code. It also makes the destination easier to recognise before opening it.

There is a distinction between printing and publishing. A team member should check the contact page and its links before sharing a card. If details change later, the public page can be updated; the information physically printed on the card still needs a new export.

Business card: a physical introduction, with a QR route to the contact page.

Email signature: the same identity in everyday correspondence.

Contact page: a place to find details and take the next step.

01

Enter it once

Use one profile for the name, role and contact details.

02

Check each introduction

Review the card, email signature and contact page before sharing.

03

Publish, then share

Check the public destination before printing a card that links to it.

The preview is a promise

One of the important refinements came from a simple observation: the downloaded PDF needed to match the business card preview. A preview that looks right is not enough if the exported file moves the spacing, changes the appearance or drops an element.

We aligned the card preview and PDF output and checked the published version. The download is also named for the person whose card it is. That small detail makes a difference when several team members’ files are being prepared together.

Email introduces a different constraint. A signature needs to survive the limitations of email software, not just look good in a modern browser. The signature uses a conservative layout and hosted images, with a plain-text alternative. Some recipients may still block images, which is why the contact information should remain useful as text.

Give people a private place to get it right

A profile should not become public simply because someone started filling in a form. Team Studio separates saving a draft from publishing a contact page. A person can prepare their details and photo, inspect the outputs and choose when to share them.

“

The form, preview, download and public destination all need to agree.

From this story · Embiro Technologies

Authorised team administrators can also prepare profiles on behalf of colleagues. That supports the everyday work of coordinating cards and signatures without requiring each person to design their own assets.

Team Studio is a small internal tool, but it illustrates a useful product principle: follow the information across the entire task. The form, preview, download and public destination all need to agree. Improving any one of them in isolation leaves the person to bridge the gaps.

Before a card goes to print

Check the spelling, role and printed details. The logo, teal and yellow were staying. So was the bold, tactile quality of the design.

“

Yellow remains an accent with a purpose, rather than the background to every message.

From this story · Embiro Technologies

That gave us a useful constraint. We could not treat “more enterprise” as an instruction to replace everything with a neutral template. The task was to make the existing identity work better for businesses and institutions considering a serious project.

We kept strong borders and distinctive colour, introduced a more rounded treatment, and used Manrope to bring the typography together. Cream and paper surfaces give the brighter elements room to do their job. Yellow remains an accent with a purpose, rather than the background to every message.

The details have to agree

The navigation became a good test of the direction. We explored separate containers for the logo, navigation items and call to action. Once those elements stood apart, differences in height, alignment and corner radius became much more noticeable.

We brought those dimensions into agreement. On scroll, a contained shared background can bring the navigation together again, while the inner elements lose the extra boundaries that would make the header feel like a collection of boxes inside a box.

That process is a reminder that a design system is experienced through relationships. A button can look right on its own and still feel wrong beside the navigation. Consistent measurements help the overall composition feel intentional.

Let the work carry more of the story

The homepage now introduces Embiro through products and selected work as well as services. Real homepage screenshots and product identities give visitors something concrete to look at while they decide whether our work is relevant to them.

We also brought case studies into the experience. A screenshot shows an outcome, but the accompanying story explains the starting point and the choices behind it. Together, they are more useful than a wall of claims about quality or innovation.

The same thinking shaped the new share images. When someone shares a project, the preview can carry that project’s own screenshot inside a consistent Embiro frame. The identity stays recognisable while the work remains the subject.

The work itself: a stored homepage capture.

The same work, introduced through an Embiro share image.

Give motion a job, too

We added page transitions, scroll entrances and timed sequences for sections with several features or steps. These should help a visitor follow the story rather than compete with it. Pause controls and reduced-motion behaviour belong in the same discussion as the animation itself.

Mobile made the trade-offs clear. A header or cookie banner that feels compact on a desktop can cover too much of a phone. We refined those surfaces to leave more room for the page while keeping navigation and consent choices usable.

The result is an evolution of the brand. It keeps the recognisable ingredients and asks more of each one: the typography must establish a hierarchy, the colour must guide attention, the motion must support understanding and the work must give people a reason to trust the introduction.

Test the experience in motion—and at rest

Try the navigation on a phone, pause the rotating content and check the site with reduced motion enabled. The information should remain clear in every state.

What we took from the work
A more professional website does not need less personality.
